Description of the works

As part of a rejuvenation initiative of the city of Brussels, Group De Cloedt has finished the construction of a recreational zone and opened the Senne near the Buda Bridge in Brussels, Belgium.
Works included: the removal and transport of 5,000 tonnes of soil and breaking open of the concrete channels in which the Senne used to flow.
All the necessary measures were taken to build up the riverbanks to prevent soil erosion.

The Senne river is the main river of Brussels, Belgium which was covered and diverted between 1867 and 1871. As part of an ongoing project for cleaning and rejuvenating the Senne, the city of Brussels tasked the creation of a green recreational zone spanning 500 m near Avenue de Vilvorde to Group De Cloedt.

Now nature can be enjoyed in its original form by the residents and visitors of Brussels and the local habitat can once again thrive. We would like to extend and special thank you to the city for allowing us to participate in such an impactful project.

Our added value

As part of a continued effort to minimise the effects on the environment, Group De Cloedt partnered with local wildlife experts to temporarily rehouse native salamanders. These salamanders were then returned to their habitat and special care was taken to create special rock structures on the banks of the Senne for the salamanders.
